Three days, 33,000 square meters, 500-plus exhibitors, over 60,000 professional visitors. The 23rd China International Power Industry Expo (CIPIE 2026) wrapped on May 30 at the Chengdu Century City New International Convention Center. SCSX Trans was there with a full booth — winding wire samples across six product categories, transformer specification sheets, and a team ready to talk conductor material with anyone who stopped by. Here is what we showed, who we met, and what the conversations say about where the power equipment supply chain is headed.


SCSX Trans at CIPIE 2026: The Booth

This was SCSX Trans’s first time exhibiting at CIPIE. We took a standard booth in the electrical equipment and components zone, surrounded by switchgear manufacturers, insulation material suppliers, and testing equipment companies. The booth was designed around one idea: let visitors pick up the product.

On the left side of the booth: a winding wire sample wall. Six rows, each holding physical wire samples mounted on display cards, with the conductor type, insulation class, and applicable standards printed underneath. On the right: two transformer cut-sheet stands, one for distribution transformers and one for power transformers, with the top three specs (kVA rating, voltage ratio, vector group) printed large enough to read from the aisle. In the center: a small meeting table that ended up being the busiest square meter of the booth.

The international delegations were a notable presence this year. CIPIE 2026 drew organized buyer groups from Germany, Russia, Singapore, the UAE, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia. We had conversations in three languages across the three days. For a Chengdu-based manufacturer with customers in over a dozen countries, having international buyers walk up to the booth without a pre-arranged meeting is a big part of why we chose this show.


What We Showed: Six Product Lines with a Story

Every product we brought to CIPIE was there for a reason. Here is the breakdown.

1. Enameled Copper Wire (Class 130 through 220)

The baseline. Round enameled copper wire from 0.05 mm up to 5.00 mm, covering thermal classes from 130 (B) through 220 (C). We displayed samples at three common diameters — 0.50 mm, 1.00 mm, and 2.00 mm — so visitors could see the coating uniformity across sizes. Domestic buyers from transformer repair shops in Sichuan and Yunnan asked practical questions: minimum order quantities, partial spool availability, lead times for less common diameters. International buyers from Southeast Asia wanted to see IEC 60317 test certificates. We had them on hand.

2. Enameled Aluminum Wire

This product drew more questions than any other single item at the booth. Copper was sitting at $10,000-$11,000 per tonne during the show, and the copper-aluminum price ratio is above 3.5x. For transformer and motor manufacturers, that price gap has moved aluminum winding wire from an experimental alternative to a standard cost-saving measure. We displayed enameled aluminum wire at 1.00 mm, 1.50 mm, and 2.50 mm alongside the equivalent copper gauges. The visual comparison alone started conversations. Domestically, distribution transformer manufacturers from Guizhou and Yunnan have been the fastest adopters. Internationally, we are seeing growing demand from Southeast Asia and the Middle East, where price-sensitive tenders increasingly list aluminum as an acceptable conductor material.

3. Enameled Copper-Clad Aluminum (ECCA)

ECCA is the product that sits between copper and aluminum — an aluminum core with a metallurgically bonded copper cladding, typically 10-15% of the wire diameter. It solders like copper. It weighs roughly 40% of what an equivalent copper conductor weighs. And it costs 30-50% less. We brought ECCA samples at 0.30 mm, 0.80 mm, and 1.20 mm. A distribution transformer engineer from Guizhou spent ten minutes with the 1.20 mm sample, asking about solderability, tensile strength, and whether we could supply it in Class 200 thermal rating. (Answer: yes.) An export buyer from a trading company in Chengdu that supplies electrical components into Vietnam and Indonesia asked about IEC 60317 compliance for ECCA — both countries now accept it in specific applications, but the documentation requirements differ. We have shipped ECCA to both markets and could walk them through the certification pathway.

4. Fiberglass-Insulated Wire

Fiberglass-insulated wire serves higher-temperature applications where standard enamel cannot handle the thermal load — transformers, reactors, traction motors, and generator windings. We showed samples with single and double glass layers, in both round and rectangular cross-sections. The dry-type transformer manufacturers who stopped by were most interested in rectangular fiberglass-covered aluminum for winding applications where weight reduction matters alongside thermal performance. One cast-resin transformer builder for wind farm step-up applications spent 20 minutes discussing specific rectangular conductor dimensions and insulation thicknesses. That conversation is continuing this week.

5. Nomex-Insulated Wire

Nomex paper-insulated wire fills the ultra-high-temperature niche — Class 220 (C) and above, where both enamel and fiberglass reach their limits. We brought samples of Nomex-covered round and rectangular conductor. The interest here came primarily from traction motor manufacturers and oil-immersed transformer builders who need the combination of high dielectric strength and thermal stability that Nomex provides. Nomex-covered wire also carries strong recognition in international markets, particularly in Europe and North America, where the DuPont brand name and the associated UL certifications carry weight with specification engineers.

6. Distribution Transformers & Power Transformers

On the transformer side, we brought datasheets and specification summaries for our standard range:

  • Distribution transformers: oil-immersed units from 50 kVA to 2,500 kVA, dry-type from 30 kVA to 1,600 kVA, covering common voltage ratios (11/0.415 kV, 33/0.415 kV, 10/0.4 kV) and vector groups (Dyn11, Yyn0)
  • Power transformers: up to 20 MVA, 110 kV class, for substation and industrial applications

The transformer interest split cleanly into two categories. Domestic EPC contractors working on rural electrification and infrastructure projects in western China wanted lead time guarantees and type-test certificates. International procurement agents — particularly from Southeast Asia and Africa — wanted IEC 60076 compliance documentation, shipping logistics details, and confirmation that we could handle port-to-site delivery. We have done all of the above. Several conversations ended with an exchange of WeChat and WhatsApp contacts, not just business cards.


Domestic vs. International: Two Markets, One Booth

One thing that stood out at CIPIE 2026: our booth served two distinct audiences simultaneously, and the questions from each were completely different.

Domestic buyers (Chinese market) focused on: – Price per kilogram, minimum order quantities, and payment terms – Lead time from order to delivery (for domestic customers, we can ship to most Chinese industrial cities in 2-5 days) – Whether we could match specific GB standards and provide Chinese-language test reports – Partial spool availability for repair shops that do not need full production reels – On-site technical support availability for larger projects

International buyers focused on: – IEC, ASTM, and BS standard compliance documentation – Export packaging (wooden spools, vacuum-sealed, fumigation-certified pallets) – Port-to-port and port-to-door shipping options – Multi-language technical documentation and mill test certificates – Long-term supply agreements with price adjustment mechanisms indexed to LME copper

We are equipped to handle both. Our factory operates to both GB and IEC standards. Our export documentation package covers everything from certificates of origin to mill test reports. We ship partial containers for small-quantity trial orders and full containers for production volumes. And we have reference customers on three continents.

The international buyer presence at CIPIE 2026 was stronger than we expected. Over the three days, we spoke with procurement representatives from Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, the UAE, Germany, and Russia — most of them part of the organized international delegation program that CIPIE runs each year. Several were not just browsing; they had specific project requirements and supplier shortlists, and they were there to check whether manufacturers could meet their documentation and compliance needs before issuing RFQs.


Three Conversations Worth Mentioning

Trade show conversations follow a predictable rhythm. The first 30 seconds tell you whether someone is genuinely sourcing or just walking the floor. Here are three that were real.

The Yunnan hydropower retrofit. An engineer from a small hydropower station upgrade project in northwestern Yunnan. Two 6.3 kV generator units undergoing stator winding replacement. Original windings: double-glass-covered copper. His question: can fiberglass-insulated aluminum hit the same thermal class at lower weight and cost? The answer is yes — same thermal rating, but the conductor cross-section needs upsizing to compensate for lower conductivity. We ran the numbers on scratch paper at the booth. He left with the calculation and said he would send generator slot dimensions by email. Domestic customer, real project, follow-up in progress.

The Sichuan data center campus. A procurement manager from a contractor building a hyperscale data center outside Chengdu. Roughly 40 dry-type transformers needed, 800 kVA to 2,500 kVA, phased over 18 months. They want finished transformers with full type-test certificates. The conversation shifted to conductor material because copper price volatility had already blown up their transformer quotes once — a bid submitted at $9,800/tonne copper came back priced at $10,500/tonne by the time they awarded the contract. We discussed locking conductor pricing at order confirmation rather than delivery. Not standard in the industry, but worth offering when the spread matters.

The multi-country export buyer. A trading company based in Chengdu that sources electrical components for infrastructure projects across Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines. They stopped at the booth specifically looking for winding wire suppliers who could: (a) provide IEC-compliant test certificates in English, (b) handle export documentation including Form E (ASEAN-China FTA) certificates of origin, and (c) supply consistently across multiple orders rather than one-off batches. We have shipped to all three countries. Vietnam requires IEC 60317 testing for imported enameled wire. Indonesia has its own SNI certification pathway for certain transformer components. The Philippines accepts IEC test reports with a local importer of record. We walked them through each market’s requirements. That moved the conversation from introduction to tender shortlist in under 15 minutes. The first RFQ arrived by email the morning after the show closed.


Why This Show, Why Chengdu

Chengdu is not Beijing or Shanghai. That is the point.

Western China is where the largest power infrastructure investments are happening right now. The West-to-East Power Transmission corridors continue expanding. Hydropower capacity in Sichuan and Yunnan is massive and still growing — the Yarlung Tsangbo River hydropower project alone will rank among the largest on the planet when complete. Data center clusters are being built in Guizhou and Sichuan, drawn by available hydropower and government incentives. Every one of those projects consumes winding wire and transformers at scale.

CIPIE dedicated an entire exhibition zone to the Yarlung Tsangbo hydropower supply chain this year. That is not a trade show gimmick. That is procurement money looking for suppliers.

For SCSX Trans, Chengdu is a strategic location. We can ship winding wire to a transformer factory in Deyang — Sichuan’s heavy electrical equipment manufacturing hub — in one day. We can have an engineer on-site at a hydropower station in Yunnan within two days. For international customers, Chengdu has direct rail freight connections to sea ports (Chongqing, Shanghai, Shenzhen) and an expanding air cargo network. Shipping a container from our facility to Ho Chi Minh City takes about 12 days port-to-port. To Dubai, roughly 18 days. We have done both.


What We Learned

No trade show is perfect. Three things we noted for next year:

Live termination demos. Several visitors asked whether ECCA really solders like copper and how aluminum wire termination works in practice. Display samples are good. A soldering iron, a reel of flux-cored solder, and a bench setup where someone watches an ECCA joint come together in 15 seconds — that is better. Next time we bring the bench setup.

More language coverage. CIPIE draws international delegations from 20-plus countries. English and Chinese covered about 80% of our conversations. The other 20% — visitors from the Middle East, Central Asia, and Latin America — sometimes relied on translation apps to communicate. Having at least a one-page product summary in Arabic, Spanish, and Russian would have captured several conversations that started with language barriers. We are working on this.

A physical transformer display. The datasheets are thorough. They are not as compelling as a cutaway transformer with visible winding construction. People in this industry trust what they can see with their own hands. A half-scale display unit or a winding cross-section in a clear resin block would anchor more conversations than any brochure. We have the factory. We can make this.


The Bottom Line

CIPIE 2026 confirmed what the copper price charts have been saying for 18 months: the winding wire market is shifting toward aluminum and ECCA at speed. Buyers who would not have looked at aluminum three years ago are now requesting comparison quotes as standard practice. ECCA has moved from a niche alternative to a standard line item in distribution transformer specifications across multiple markets.

But the bigger takeaway was about geography. The power equipment supply chain has two growth centers right now: western China’s infrastructure build-out and Southeast Asia’s electrification push. CIPIE sits at the intersection of both. SCSX Trans does too.

We came back from Chengdu with 40-plus qualified contacts, three active RFQs, and a much clearer picture of what both our domestic and international customers need in 2026.
